"When we founded the Shipwright as a performance venue and producing theatre our aim was to create a space where audiences and artists could have a great time asking big questions of the world around us, in the most remarkable of settings.

That work takes many forms, but at the heart of everything we do is the desire to bring the most exciting creatives together with the most enthusiastic audiences and to remove any barriers between them. That way they can provoke, inspire and surprise each other.

In particular we often work with creatives in the early and middle stages of their careers. The single most impactful way we can support them is by putting their work on stage in front of paying audiences. And the single most impactful way we can encourage audiences into the theatre is by making tickets affordable. Your support helps us to take calculated risks on the new writers, directors, actors, designers and producers we think our audiences will enjoy at a reasonable price.

The Shipwright is a small theatre with a big ambition. However, even when our auditorium is sold out, ticket sales can only provide 50% of the income we need to survive. We consequently need support from individuals, trusts and corporate partners who share our passion.

Recent highlights at the Shipwright include:

  • A sold-out run of a new musical, The Pied Piper by Eleanor Colville & Joseph Winters, back by popular demand in 2022

  • Two sold-out productions in collaboration with our educational partners, Rose Bruford College, giving acting and technical students the chance to work in a unique immersive setting

  • Employment of technical staff through Clean Break initiatives, for people with experience of the judicial system

  • A new Summer Festival attracting thousands of visitors to Deptford for live music, theatre and cabaret

  • The development of new writing and performance in partnership with the John Hodgeson Theatre Research Trust
