The Shipwright was a project based at the Master Shipwright’s House between 2020 and 2025. Over six years we made operas, plays, readings, festivals and pantomimes in the space where we lived and worked, inviting artists and audiences into our home to create an environment unlike any other theatre we knew of. We worked with some of the most exciting new artists of our generation as well as co-producing big new works with some of our heroes. All of this was made possible by the enormous generosity of Willi Richards and Chris Mažeika, as well as the ever-changing ensemble of creatives living and working at the house.
With the future of the site uncertain, in 2025 we took the decision to bring the Shipwright experiment to a close. Over the next few months we will be making this website into a site that celebrates the work we made and the times we shared at the Shipwright, hosting our favourite photos, and archival footage.
But there is also something new coming… The team behind the Shipwright 2020–2025 are developing a new project, taking everything we learned about creating atmospheric theatre and performance environments in unusual spaces around London, as well as working on some new musical pantomimes, that we hope to bring to you soon. If you enjoyed the work we made and would like to see what we do next, sign up to our mailing list below and we will be in touch soon.
With all our love, and thanks for joining us over the years,
Joe, Emma & all at Shipwright HQ
