The Waterfront Journals

by David Wojnarowicz
directed by Ellie Kendrick, Alex Lawther, Joseph Winters & Hugh Wyld

A staged promenade reading of David Wojnarowicz’s autobiographical fiction

The Waterfront Journals is a wild road trip through the visceral and perilous world of 1980s alternative America.

For a one off promenade performance in aid of east London based HIV charity Positive East, Jack Holden (Cruise, The Duchess Theatre), Faye Marsay (ROAD, Royal Court) and Omar Bynon (2036: Pawn, Bush Theatre) give voice to David Wojnarowicz’s fictional monologues, written throughout his travels sleeping rough throughout the 1970s and 80s, with musical accompaniment by Linus Fenton.

Directed by Ellie Kendrick (writer, HOLE, Royal Court Theatre), Alex Lawther (The End of the F***ing World, The Imitation Game, The Jungle), and Hugh Wyld (Trigonometry, HIV Voices, Denim).

We meet these hustlers, runaways and dreamers in unassuming locations—in truck stops, bus stations and parks. Their stories are disturbing, often shocking; but they’re told with an honesty and a hallucinatory intensity that demands to be heard.

“Wojnarowicz proves that the difference between the rules of poverty and those of a dream is nothing more than smoke. The termination point of American life examined by the terminal American artist.” Jarett Kobek

Ten percent of each ticket price goes towards a donation to Positive East, an East London based charity providing support for those with HIV.
